Born on 17 August, 1902, Catriona studied Drawing and Painting as an evening student the Glasgow School of Art in 1918-1919. At the time she enrolled at the School, she was employed as a 'Touching Up Photographer' and lived with her family at 22 Montgomerie street in North Kelvinside. Her elder sister Lesley studied with her, following the same course. She later went on to study nursing at the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow and sat her final nursing exams in 1926.
