History
Born on 9 August 1890, John Cochrane studied as a day student in the Drawing and Painting Section at the Glasgow School of Art from 1909 until 1915 and was awarded his Diploma in 1913. His address was recorded as 9 Finnart Street, Greenock throughout his time at the school. In his first year, he was taught by Allan Mainds and Alexander Jackson (Antique and Preparatory Life) and later studied with James Huck (Life) and Profs. Artot and Britten (for Life, and Design and Decorative Art). He exhibited at three paintings at the RSA in 1913, and one at the RGFIA in 1915, where he was described as an engraver in the catalogue. There are two paintings by him in the McLean Art Gallery and Museum in Greenock; a dockyard scene showing a November morning at the East India Dock in Greenock and a portrait of an unknown woman. (Both can be viewed on the artuk.org website) Also in the collection at the McLean Gallery is an oil painting on canvas entitled 'Mrs. Margaret Cochran' by John Stevenson (1834 Kilmarnock - c 1871) In the notes about this painting, the sitter is said to be the artist's sister, Margaret Stevenson (b. 1848), who later became Mrs. Margaret Cochran, marrying Robert Cochran of Greenock at 60 Princes Street, Ardrossan on 9th November 1880. (Greenock Advertiser 11.11.1880 & Greenock Telegraph 11.11.1880). This note goes on to state that, 'their son was the artist John S. Cochran, born in 1891'.
