History

Mary (Mollie) A. S. Buchanan (born 13/06/1897) studied Evening Classes in Design at the Glasgow School of Art between 1916 and 1920. In the Student Register, her occupation was listed as "Designer". She was most likely taking the classes to bolster her skills. During her time at the GSA, Mary won multiple prizes and bursaries. In 1916- 1917, she was awarded the Bronze Medal for Design, and a Haldane Trust Bursary of £2. In 1917 - 1918, Mary achieved second prize for Design and an additional bursary from the Haldane Trust of £1, 1 shilling. In 1918 -1919 she was awarded another bursary from the Haldane Trust. As these prizes were all awarded on the merit of the student's work, it is noted in the register that Mary "cannot come". Therefore, although she had achieved a bursary for that year, she did not attend any further classes. Mary lived in Crosshill in Glasgow.
