James Nicol McBroom was a student at The Glasgow School of Art from 1915-1917, where he studied drawing and painting. He was a distinguished student and prize winner; awarded the 2nd place prize in the Anatomy school award in the 1916-17 session. This prize was valued at £2 2s and 3 prizes were awarded in this session. James was also awarded the Windsor and Newton prize in the session 1915-1916 and in 1917 he gained a Diploma in drawing and painting.
During World War I James was not able to go on active military duty due to ill health, but he was assigned to munitions work during the war. from 30th April 1918 - 29th December 1921 he was employed at the offices of Alexander Findlay and company (engineers) in Motherwell. During this time he also utilised the skills he had learnt whilst studying at Glasgow school of Art to create a WWI Role of Honour for his local parish, Dalziel St Andrews Parish Church in Motherwell. He also designed a war memorial for Alexander Findlay.
Very active in the local community during the war years, James undertook fire watching duties from the rooftop of Dalziel High School, looking out for any fires which may have started due to bombs being dropped during air raids.
James went on to become an art teacher at St Johns Grammar in Hamilton and Wishaw High School. He later held the post of Head of the Art Department at Lanark Grammar in 1937.
Each year at The Glasgow School of Art there is a James Nicol McBroom Memorial Prize for fine art. This prize is awarded to a student of painting and printmaking whose work will be purchased for the GSA's own Archives and Collections.
James Nicol McBroom died in 1983 aged 87.

McCafferty studied at the GSA for nine years between 1894 and 1905, first recording his occupation as a piano tuner, but going on to describe himself as a designer, signwriter and painter. He lived at 218 Saracen Street initially, moving to 435 New City Road in 1896, 228 Cambridge Street from 1898, then finally 59 Garscube Road.

The daughter of a Greenock Ships Chandler, Marion enrolled at the GSA in 1896 when she was 21. The register records her occupation as teacher and her address as 28 Finnart Street, Greenock. She took classes at the Art School for two years.

William J McCallien studied at the GSA from 1891 to 1893, registering his home address as Tarbert, Loch Fyne and his occupation as fisherman. A gifted student, he won several prizes during his Art School career, the most significant being 2nd prize for Painting in monochrome in the 1893 Local examination, and 1st prize for Painting from Still Life the following year. Most of his known works are of boats or harbour scenes.
The Argyllshire PO Directory of 1903 has an entry for a WJ McCallien, boat and shoemaker who is presumed to be a relative. His son, Prof William John McCallien FRSE FGS OBE, (1902-1981) was an eminent Scottish geologist.

David McChleary was born in Clydebank on the 25th March 1891, one of three children of Agnes (née Black) and William McChleary. He had two younger sisters, Euphemia and Isabel. McChleary attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1906 to 1915, beginning when he was only 15 years old, as a part time student of Architecture. Euphemia also joined The Glasgow School of Art in 1913 as a student of drawing and painting. During the First World War, McChleary served as a Private in the Highland Light Infantry as well as a Lieutenant in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. After the war, McChleary married Margaret Whyte in Glasgow, 1919. By 1939, he had become a member of the Glasgow Institute of Architects and his only known works are located in Helensburgh. He died in 1951, aged 60, in Glasgow. McChleary is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.

Painter, printmaker, designer and teacher, born in Greenock, Renfrewshire. He studied at The Glasgow School of Art. In 1964 he was appointed head of the textile department at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen. McCoig was artist-in-residence at Soulesquoi Printmakers, in Orkney, and in 1988 was visiting lecturer at the University of Nigeria. Among the awards he won were a Scottish Arts Council Award in 1975 and an Arts Council Bursary to Madison, Wisconsin. McCoig's solo shows included New 57 Gallery, Edinburgh, and in 1980 a retrospective in Scotland which included The Glasgow School of Art. He was in the first show held by Compass Gallery, Glasgow, and in The Compass Contribution at Tramway, Glasgow, 1990.

Robert McCracken was born in Newmonkland, Lanark, to Mary Nisbet McCracken (née McHutchison) and Robert McCracken, a master builder. During the First World War he served as a signalman at the Royal Navy base HMS Vivid at Devonport. In 1920 he attended evening classes in architecture at The Glasgow School of Art while working as an apprentice architect. During this period his place of residence is listed as Airdrie. On February 25 1929 he married Jeanie Duncan Meffan, and on 3 March they travelled to the USA aboard the Montroyal to New Brunswick. They returned from New York to Scotland a year later. Robert McCracken is listed on The Glasgow School of Art's World War One Roll of Honour.

William McCrea was born on 4 February 1896 to Agnes McArthur MacKintosh and John McCrea, a bank agent. He was educated at Kirkcaldy High School, and upon leaving school was was articled to architect David Forbes Smith of Kirkcaldy. He attended The Glasgow School of Art as a day student of architecture from 1919 to 1922, and as an evening student from 1922 to 1926. During this time he worked as a draughtsman at various offices in Glasgow, including James Miller and John Burnet, Son & Dick. In 1922 he studied in Northern France for several months. From 1924 to 1928 he was an assistant to architect James Taylor Thomson, where in 1936 he was promoted to chief assistant. He became as a partner to Thomson the following year, but his name was not acknowledged in the practice title until around 1942. He was admitted ARIBA in 1928 and elected FRIBA in 1943. From 1953 to 1954 McCrea was President of the Glasgow Institute of Architects, and in 1955 was elected President of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS). He died on 3 June 1974. William McCrea is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's World War One Roll of Honour.

Born in Glasgow in 1935, McCulloch studied at the GSA from 1953-1957 and was awarded a Royal Scottish Academy Travelling Scholarship the year he left Art School. Elected a Member of the Society of Scottish Artists in 1964, he received Scottish Arts Council Awards in 1967 and 1972, and was elected Academician, Royal Scottish Academy, in 2005.
His work can be found in many public collections including Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow, the City Art Centre, Edinburgh and the Saatchi Collection, London. Although best known as a painter, he has also produced ceramics, sculptures and relief prints.
Winner of the Glasgow International Concert Hall Mural Competition 1989-90, the removal of his painting, “Strathclyde” at the request of the Glasgow Lord Provost caused some controversy at the time.

Frank McElhinney was born in Motherwell, Scotland, and grew up in East Kilbride where his family moved in 1966. He studied Fine Art Photography at the Glasgow School of Art after a twenty year career in manufacturing. Immediately after graduation in 2014 he won first prize in the Jill Todd Photographic Award. Since then he has exhibited exhibited in Lithuania, China and throughout the United Kingdom. His first degree was in Medieval and Modern History and his photographic practice uses history as material for exploring contemporary issues such as migration, nationhood and urbanism.
