Instant Whip: revisiting the textiles and papers of Fraser Taylor, 1977–1987

15 Mar – 20 Apr 2024

Instant Whip: revisiting the textiles and papers of Fraser Taylor, 1977–1987 is a new project that focuses on Scotland’s fashion and textiles history through engagement with material held in a unique collection held in The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) Archives and Collections, donated by textile artist Fraser Taylor in 2014.

The collection encompasses drawings, textile samples, fabric lengths, garments and printed/ photographic ephemera from when Taylor studied as an undergraduate student at GSA and The Royal College of Art. It also includes work he produced as part of 1980s creative collective The Cloth.

Co-curated by Panel with Dr Helena Britt (GSA), an exhibition, publication and events programme will bring together historic material and newly commissioned work. Together they intend to explore, in both Fraser Taylor’s individual work and as part of 1980s collective The Cloth, recurring links to Glasgow as a place of creativity during the period 1977–87.

Instant Whip: revisiting the textiles and papers of Fraser Taylor, 1977-1987 is co-curated by Dr Helena Britt with Panel and presented in partnership with The Glasgow School of Art Archives and Collections, The Reid Gallery at The Glasgow School of Art and Print Clan.

It is generously funded by Creative Scotland and The Hope Scott Trust.

Instant Whip will open on 15 March 2024 and run until 20 April 2024.
