James Andrew Ross was born in Wemyss, Fife on 9th July 1984, one of five children of Mary Ross and Donald Ross, the headmaster at Wemyss School. Ross, also a teacher, attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1913 to 1914 as an evening student of design, taught by Mr Davidson. During the First World War, Ross served as a Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders. Ross was 2nd master at Bearsden Academy and was married to Marjory Ross. Ross was killed in action on 26th July 1916. Ross is commemorated at Thiepval Memorial in France, in a memorial at Bearsden Primary School, and on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
