Henry Alexander Rankin was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire in 1886, one of nine children of Christina Dykes and James Deans Rankin, a cork manufacturer as well as glass and china merchant. He attended The Glasgow School of Art for one year in 1906 as a part-time student in Architecture, while working as an architect. During the First World War, Henry served in the 9th battalion of the Highland Light Infantry, discharged after his service was complete in July of 1917. Henry Alexander Rankin is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
