Almost all works are by former students and staff or figures related to the history of The Glasgow School of Art. The earliest pieces date from the 16th century and later examples have been purchased from recent Degree Shows. The work is in a variety of media and includes drawings, paintings, prints, sketchbooks, furniture and sculpture. Artists represented include many key figures and the most influential and successful students.

There are also several works from former tutors including Neil Dallas Brown, David Donaldson and Fred Selby, alongside contemporary works by students, donated or purchased at degree show. Key works include those by: Maurice Greiffenhagen, Francis Newbery, John Quinton Pringle, Benno Schotz, Ian Fleming and James D Robertson. Suites of note include large collections of Joan Eardley sketches and paintings, Joan Palmer prints, and architectural drawings by Eugene Bourdon.

Collection of 31 pottery fragments

Group of 31 glazed and gilded pottery fragments from Persia/Egypt/Syria. Includes imagery of ornamental designs, figures, animals, and Arabic/Cufic lettering. May have been collected and given to the school by William Matthew Flinders Petrie in the early 20th century. Likely brought to the Glasgow School of Art to be used as teaching aids.

1) (NMC/1633A) Fragment of a dish or bowl. Cream glaze on the recto with a yellow/gold hand-painted figure on a horse surrounded by patterns. Metallic/mineral shine. Pale green glaze on the outside.

2) (NMC/1633B) Triangular shaped fragment with cream glaze with yellow/gold hand-painted design on recto.

3) (NMC/1633C) Fragment of what might be a cross. Turquoise glaze with red hand-painted designs and gold leaf. Embossed leaf pattern on recto.

4) (NMC/1633D) Fragment of hanging wall plate or dish. Metal hook for wall hanging is still attached. Made of red clay. Cream glaze with earthy brown and dark brown paint on recto. Inscription of what is possibly Arabic word(s) on recto.

5) (NMC/1633E) Circular shaped fragment of hanging wall plate or dish. Made of red clay. Deep green glaze with dark brown hand-painted design. Label on bottom - 'Egypt 13-15th C.

6) (NMC/1633F) Fragment of wall hanging bowl or dish. Yellow/gold glaze on recto with hand-painted light brown swirl pattern.

7) (NMC/1633G) Fragment from what might be a tile. Hand-painted flower and petal shapes in blue, black, yellow, and turquoise paint. '85' and 'SHAH ISF' handwritten on verso. Shah (Persian) is a title given to the emperors/kings and lords of Iran.

Ephemera collection

Includes catalogues, programmes, flyers and tickets for Glasgow School of Art exhibitions, pageants, lectures and theatrical events as well as posters from Activities Week events and student fashion shows, dating from 1890 to the present. Ephemera also includes a collection of postcards from c1900 to the present, as well as material relating to: Glasgow School of Art's involvement with the international exhibition scene; records of the Woman's Work Exhibition, London, 1900; records of the Glasgow School of Art participation in the Glasgow International Exhibition, 1901; the Exhibition of Modern Furniture, Budapest, 1902; the Brussels Exhibition, 1910; and papers documenting the organisation of the Scottish Pavilion at the Exhibition of Decorative Arts, Turin, 1902. The Glasgow School of Art

Tudor Flower Motif

British formal flower motif outlined in chain-stitched metal thread, on linen. Blackwork fillings in silk in several patterns have become worn in places. The motif has been cut out of background and mounted on modern linen. About half the metal thread embroidery is modern restoration. Shows influence of formal Sanish design. Much of the outline is restoration and has been remounted. This work may have been carried out in J&P Coats studio. Another identical and two related motifs, donated to the NDS by John Jacoby are in the Embroiderers' Guild Collection (EG 206). Originally they may have been part of a cover for a long cushion.

Records and textiles of the Needlework Development Scheme

The collection consists of the surviving papers of the Needlework Development Scheme and over 100 examples of needlework. Of these examples, 28 are from Great Britain and 54 are examples of non-British work including examples from Greece, India, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey and Bosnia. Items include ecclesiatical, domestic, costume, clothing and modern embroideries, tea cosies, funeral pall, clothing, lace work, wall hangings, samplers, linen work and cushion covers.

The surviving papers include a complete inventory of 1012 items that were part of the Needlework Development Scheme prior to its dispersal in 1961. This provides information on the original numbering scheme used for the needlework examples and also provides information on the provenance of each item, although this is not necessarily the creator of the item but the person from whom the item was received, as well as a description of the item itself. There is an inventory of the parts of the collection received by the Glasgow School of Art, insurance details concerning the collection and the correspondence of the Needlework Development Scheme, 1931-1941.

This material may contain sensitive information about individuals that is protected by the Data Protection Act. Until this material has been checked for sensitive information, it will not be available for researchers. Once this Data Protection work is complete the collection will be open for access, however any sensitive information will be closed and inaccessible for 75 years from the date of creation.

Portuguese. Part of peasant costume. Closely woven in red wool on white warp. Geometric design in bright colours in loom embroidery - extra weft pulled up in loops on the surface Yellow braid waistband, and pink braid edges.

Belt with Purse and Pincushion

British. Plaited green silk belt with silver fastening. Purse and pincushion are tapestry woven in silks and metal thread, and are attached to belt with plaited cords. Purse has drawstring fastening finished with woven tassels made over wooden beads. Purse has floral design and pincushion features a small bird.

Italian. Worked on fine corded cream silk in metal threads and floss silk in graduations of tones of green and pink. Shows influence of Oriental design. Some areas have been unpicked and the background has shredded in places.

Sleeve Band

Chinese. From a jacket. Yellow silk ground almost entirely covered with embroidered pattern inspired by waves and sea spray. Use of shading copied by European embroideries in the 18th century.

Stump-work Picture

British. Shows two royal personages in 17th century costume. Figures and animal motifs are padded, and flower petals and clothing are worked in detached buttonhole stitch. Dated 1652 with a monograph at the man's feet in small pearls.

Sampler

British. Long linen sampler worked in coloured silks in decorative bands including alphabets, geometric patterns and flower motifs in large variety of stitches. Signed 'A.B.' or 'R.B.' 1669. The originally bright colours can be seen on the back, but the front is faded.

British. Jacobean design chain-stitch throughout, in coloured wools on linen. Extensive use of shading. Embroidery in good condition but background is worn and has been mounted on a backing.

Chinese Emperor ceramic figure

Cream coloured glazed ceramic Chinese figure in court dress. Some damage (repaired) to neck and missing hands. Old paper label with no. 629/20 and 'Sch 76' in red paint inside figure suggest that it was part of the School's handling collection.
