History
David Cunninghame Woodside was born in Govan, Glasgow on the 21st of March 1890, one of five sons of Elizabeth Mitchell Marr (née Calderwood) and Reverend David Woodside. Woodside attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1907 to 1914 as a student of architecture whilst working as an architect's apprentice. During the First World War, Woodside served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Scots Fusiliers 4th battalion. He first joined the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) 5th battalion in August 1915. In December 1915, he was wounded at Cape Helles in the battle of Gallipoli. Woodside died of his wounds on the 26th of February 1916, aged 26. He is buried at Cape Helles and also has a grave in the Glasgow Western Necropolis. Woodside is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
