History
Mary Waddell was born on 17th September 1888 in Lezayre, Isle of Man. Her family was originally from Coatbridge (North Lanarkshire) and had returned to live in Glasgow by the turn of the 20th Century. She was a student at The Glasgow School of Art from 1907 to 1916, the last three years as an evening student. She specialised in Design, studying under professors Maurice Greiffenhagen and Paul Artot, among other instructors. While studying at The Glasgow School of Art, and at least until the end of the 1920s, she lived with her family in Glasgow; first at Ledard Road (Langside) and then at Holland Street (City Centre). She also listed her address as 319 Sauchiehall Street from 1913 to 1916, an address listed by artist Mary Eunson as her commercial address in the Post Office directory of 1911-12. This was probably used by Waddell as an art studio for her work as a designer.
