Pewter mug

Pewter mug with handle. Red marking on bottom, "SCH.298". Small indented markings on side "QUART", "A8", "Wood & Sons, Glasgow", and Queen Victoria royal cypher. Due to information in an inventory, mug can be dated pre-1958.

The Glasgow School of Art photographic collection consists of

  • images taken by GSA to record the activities of the School

  • and images used as teaching aids at GSA.

Some of this material is currently uncatalogued and therefore not accessible for researchers.

The photographic collections consist of loose photographs, bound albums of photographs and a large collection of lantern slides and glass plate negatives.

The photographs record events at The Glasgow School of Art, its students and their work and act as an important historical source. A large part of the collection consists of the plate glass negatives which were used from the 19th century onwards as a teaching aid and consist of photographic plates of international artworks and architectural examples.

We have identified people depicted in these photographs where possible. Please get in touch if you spot any inconsistencies, omissions or errors, and we will edit descriptions accordingly.

Pink and black embroidery display

Framed display of pink and black embroidery with beading, with engraved title "Samples and Examples by Anne Knox Arthur, The Glasgow School of Art". Includes label "Embroidery C_Black and Pink" and instruction on back of frame. Due to information in archival documentation, display case can be dated pre-1943.

Original: Statue of a young nude male found at Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli c1730. Antinous (November 29, 111-October 30, 130) was a member of the entourage of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, to whom he was beloved. Original currently in the collection of The Capitoline, Rome, Italy.

This item was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 15th June 2018.

Original: This cast is of a 1st - 2nd century AD Roman marble copy of the Praxiteles original (Bronze, attributed by Pliny). It shows a nude adolescent male about to catch a lizard climbing up a tree. The left arm, the right hand and the lizard's head are modern restorations. It could indirectly refer to Apollo's fight against the serpent Python or, if the lizard is an attribute of the god, it could show Apollo in his purifying function, as a destroyer of plagues. Original currently in the collection of the Louvre, Paris, France.

Original: An athlete, caught in the familiar act of scraping sweat and dust from his body with the small curved instrument that the Romans called a strigil. This cast is of the legs of the cast only. Original currently in the collection of the Museo Pio-Clementino in the Vatican, Rome, Italy.
