History
David Clark Rutherford was born in 1895 and attended The Glasgow School of Art for the academic year 1918 to 1919. During this time Rutherford resided at 22 Craigpark Drive, Dennistoun, to the east of Glasgow City Centre. His tuition was subsidised by the City Local Authority.
Rutherford's occupation at the time is recorded as 'Ship Draughtsman' meaning that he was likely employed to draught technical drawings and sketches for one of Glasgow's ship-building companies. Rutherford undertook his studies by evening, perhaps given that he was occupied with his work during the day. He studied Drawing and Painting during his time at The School, although his specific area of study is unknown. We may speculate that he undertook this programme of study to further his skills in draughtsmanship, as the evening course offered tuition in areas such as black and white application, printing processes and lithography, many of which would have been useful skills within Rutherford's profession.
