History

James Russell was born in 1901 and studied at The Glasgow School of Art for the academic year commencing 1917. During this time he resided at 36 Inglefield Street, south of Glasgow city centre. Russell's tuition was subsidised by the City Local Authority.

Russell was an evening student of Drawing and Painting for his year at The School. He received a £1 bursary from the Marshall Trust. Russell's occupation is listed as 'Apprentice Architect' in the student register, suggesting that he was also enrolled in the Royal Technical College which at the time offered an Architecture course in partnership with The Glasgow School of Art.

Whether Russell continued with his artistic ambitions following his time at The School is unknown.
