History
John M.P Rule was born in 1901 and studied at The Glasgow School of Art for three years, from 1917 to 1920. During this time he resided at 14 Hill Street on Garnethill, opposite what is now The School's Haldane Building. Given his young age, we may surmise that this may have been his family home.
Rule was enrolled as an evening student during his time at The School. His occupation is recorded as 'Apprentice House Painter,' which is possibly why he chose to pursue his studies by evening as he was likely engaged in work during the day. During his first year at The School, Rule was enrolled as a student from the 'Continuation Classes' and received a bursary of £3 from the Glasgow City Educational Endowments fund. The Continuation Classes were facilitated through The Glasgow School of Art in partnership with several High Schools in the area and provided young students with an introduction to Art and Design.
Rule studied Design for his first year under the tutelage of A. Aston Nicholas, the Professor of Design and Decorative Art at this time. Designing decoration for wallpaper, including plant forms and interlacing, was a lesson taught by A. Aston Nicholas and was likely of interest to Rule, given his occupation as an Apprentice House Painter. Furthermore, Rule studied Drawing and Painting for the following academic year commencing in 1918, so it is likely he gained skills which he could then apply to his profession. He also received a bursary from The Haldane Trust for this year.
