History
William Norval Robertson was born in 1896 and attended The Glasgow School of Art for the academic year 1915 to 1916. During this time he resided at Regent Place, Shawlands, south of Glasgow City Centre. His tuition was subsidised by the City Local Authority.
Robertson was a student of the Design department and he chose to pursue his studies by evening, his occupation being a textile manufacturer. He was also in fact a student of The Royal Technical College, also known as The Royal College of Science and Technology, which operated as a vocational institution in Glasgow between 1887 and 1964. The Technical College was affiliated with The Glasgow School of Art with the former offering the more 'practical' aspects of design and the latter offering tuition in the more 'aesthetic' elements. This affiliation incorporated The Weaving, Dyeing and Printing College, where Robertson was in attendance.
It is also possible that William Robertson was part of the family that operated Anderson and Robertson Ltd., a North Lanarkshire based silk-throwing company which existed between 1877 to 1964. The company was family-run throughout its lifetime and given that William Robertson both studied weaving and worked with textiles, we may surmise that he was involved in the business in some way. The firm was successful and operated mills in Govan, Motherwell and Suffolk, becoming a leading manufacturer of man-made fibres such as Nylon during the post-war period of the 1940's. It was the last company to throw silk in Scotland and ceased production in 1964.
