Biographical history

Much about Sadahide’s early career is unknown, but he began documenting the growth of Yokohama as a seaport around 1859. His specialty was creating cartographical prints in which he used as many as nine multiple sheets of paper joined together, resulting in spectacular visual panoramas measuring up to six feet in length. Many of these were views of foreign locations based on images produced in western periodicals. Their purpose was to introduce his Japanese audience to the nature of localities they were not likely to visit in person.
