Henry Nimmo was born on the 20th of June 1897, in Cleland, the West district of Shotts, one of eight children of Jessie Nimmo (née McAlpine) and Henry Nimmo, a carter. Nimmo attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1914 to 1916 and from 1918 to 1919 as a student of full time drawing and painting and again from 1919 to 1920, as a Master of Letters funded by the Ministry of Labour. Students who fought in the First World War were provided funding for a year on return from serving in the war. During the First World War, Nimmo served as a private in the Royal Scots battalion. He was awarded the Military Medal with Bar. Not much is known of Nimmo during or after the war. Nimmo is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
