Robert William McKean was born in Glasgow on the 7th of March, 1888, one of two sons of Hannah J McKean and William McKean, a stationer. Robert attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1906 to 1911 alternating between full-time and part-time in Sculpture while also working as a stationer and printer. He is listed under Associates of the School in 1913 as a 'sculptor'. During the First World War, Robert served as a Lieutenant in the Highland Light Infantry. Robert William McKean is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
