James Monteith Maclean was born in Paisley on the 24th of October 1893, the youngest of four children of Elizabeth and Alexander Maclean, packer in a jam factory. He attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1914 to 1916 as a part-time student in architecture while working as an architect's apprentice. During the First World War, Maclean served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Highland Light Infantry. James Monteith Maclean is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
