William Galloway Mackie was born on 11th June 1897. He attended evening classes in design at The Glasgow School of Art from 1913 to 1915 while working as an apprentice designer. He terminated his studies in 1915 to serve as an ambulance driver for the British Red Cross during the First World War. He is listed in the School's World War One Roll of Honour.
