History

Helen Kempton was born in 1899. Her father was a publican in the village. Her two brothers fought in France (one for Canadian Forces). In 1917, both were killed in action within a few months of each other. In December 1917 her father drowned in the Forth & Clyde Canal which runs through the village.

Helen attended The Glasgow School of Art for one academic year, between 1914 and 1915. During this time she resided at Bankside House, Old Kilpatrick, an area north-west of Glasgow. Her tuition was subsidised by Dumbarton Local Authority.

Kempton was an evening student of Drawing and Painting. It is likely she studied Life Drawing, Anatomy, Lithography and Etching, all of which were on offer as part of the evening course. The supervisors at the time were James M. Dunlop and James Gray.

Whether Kempton continued to pursue her artistic ambitions after her studies is unknown. She died in 1966.
