Project description:
The “Post-Landfill”: Finding sustainability in problematic mid-20th century heritage.
The thesis explores a renovation strategy of a vacant hospital in Glasgow through testing the limits of reuse practices of reclaimed materials from demolished buildings. Since 1990, 45% of all demolitions in Scotland took place in Glasgow. Its tendency of reinventing itself by constantly demolishing raised interest in what opportunities can be found in this abundance of construction waste. The project addresses issues faced by similar estates around Europe doomed for demolition - the high cost of renovation/maintenance, unpopularity and tainted collective memory, inefficient floor planning, unattractive aesthetics, secluded urban placemaking, poor detailing and energy efficiency. Reuse methods of the reclaimed materials are utilized to inform the building’s programme and architecture by proposing a 20th-century heritage reuse institute, public workshops, affordable rent studios, commercial spaces, and an innovation centre. Imperfect materials are embraced over immaculate surfaces challenging the public’s view of decay as a sign of sustainability through longevity.

Material related to designing a board game to be used as a teaching tool for students of architecture and construction courses. Created by both Chris Platt and another student, David Smith, as they decided to design this game instead of writing a 10,000 word essay. Features two items: the commission report, and the game equipment in a wooden box. This special subject output was submitted in October 1980.

An architectural plan on paper printed with the name and address of Thomas Cordiner Cunningham and Partners, architects and town planning consultants. The plan appears to be related to a single room. In the top left corner of the plan is an annotation of Avella's name and address. Both this address and the architects' use the numbers of Glasgow postal districts which predate the introduction of the national postcode system, indicating that this document likely dates from before the mid-1970s when modern postcodes became ubiquitous. In the 'revisions' section of the page is a note which reads '167 Bath St., Dean of Guild Court Office, Mining Warrant Form'. On the reverse, there is a small rectangular sketch annotated with measurements and a separate annotation which reads 'Glasgowcorp 221-9600., Mr W Kilwraith EXT-2443., Monday Mning [sic] 10.30, Room 77'.

A variety of drawings and graphic designs created by Gerard V. Murphy, a former student at The Glasgow School of Art in the 1930s. The diverse subjects of his drawings include animals, plants, architecture, human anatomy and figures. A subfonds titled 'Teaching examples' features his teaching materials as an art teacher at schools, intended for printmaking techniques and pattern design education.

Most items have been marked with his name or student registration numbers, assuming they were created during his time as a student at GSA. The dominant materials in his works are pencil and watercolour, worked on cartridge paper.

Some of this material was damaged in the fire in GSA's Mackintosh Building on 23rd May 2014. Paper conservation was completed in 2019.

Cowcaddens, a neighbourhood located within the city centre, yet segregated by elevated roads and unwelcoming ground floor car park underneath the 1960s housing estate’s pilotis, presents a Glasgow specific issue of disintegrated urban fabric as a result of post-war developments. To address this challenge, the concept of thresholds is applied, setting up the research question: Can concept of thresholds be explored on the scale of a neighbourhood and become a tool to determine and replace physical and social boundaries?

Almost all works are by former students and staff or figures related to the history of The Glasgow School of Art. The earliest pieces date from the 16th century and later examples have been purchased from recent Degree Shows. The work is in a variety of media and includes drawings, paintings, prints, sketchbooks, furniture and sculpture. Artists represented include many key figures and the most influential and successful students.

There are also several works from former tutors including Neil Dallas Brown, David Donaldson and Fred Selby, alongside contemporary works by students, donated or purchased at degree show. Key works include those by: Maurice Greiffenhagen, Francis Newbery, John Quinton Pringle, Benno Schotz, Ian Fleming and James D Robertson. Suites of note include large collections of Joan Eardley sketches and paintings, Joan Palmer prints, and architectural drawings by Eugene Bourdon.

Collection includes: Artworks by Colin Wilson including drawings, paintings, prints and graphic design works; artworks by various artists collected by Colin Wilson including prints by Alasdair Gray, Elspeth Lamb and Alan Cox; associated papers and ephemera including notebooks from Wilson's studies at school and at The Glasgow School of Art, exhibition posters and Wilson's Curriculum Vitae; and material related to Peter Blake including magazine articles, correspondence and photographs.
