San Gimignano correspondence

Conrad McKenna’s correspondence and materials relating to The Glasgow Summer School held in San Gimignano during his various teaching roles at The Glasgow School of Art. Including a combination of typed and hand written materials, newspaper clippings, floor plans and printed ephermera. Including correspondence in English and Italian with: The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture, Robert Gordons Institute of Technology, Universita Italiana per Stranieri, Provincial Tourist Office – Sienna, Societa Dante Alighieri, Convento S. Agostino, Comune Di Bresica, Intercultural and Permanent Education Centre (San Gimignano),  and Professor Mario Serchi. Correspondence generally details travel and accommodation arrangements, itineraries and costings for The Summer School at San Gimignano alongside its relationships and partnerships with individuals and institutions. Selections of correspondence detail Italian students’ visit to Scotland. Also includes correspondence with the Intercultural and Permanent Education Centre, San Gimignano, detail Draft Articles of Association; an account of The Glasgow Summer School in 1969 by Douglas Percy Bliss, which describes San Gimignano, the Church of Saint Agostino where the school was held and accommodated and the school’s interaction with the local population. A typed account of the origins of The Summer School at San Gimignano by Conrad McKenna is also included. Printed ephemera includes two brochures from 1969 and 1971 detailing itineraries, arrangements and costs of The Glasgow Summer School.

Photographs

A collection of photographs and negatives taken by George Oliver dating from 1948-1990 (apart from two dated c1897). George arranged his photographs into folders by approximate subject matter and gave each folder a title. This has been reflected in the catalogue with the folder titles in the catalogue being the exact titles George used. The folders have been arranged by subject matter where possible. There are exceptions to the above. Folders DC 066/2/20 and DC 066/2/86 have not been given a title by George and have been catalogued as 'Untitled'. There are exceptions to this with DC 066/2/78 containing photographs taken by Cordelia Oliver as they date from after George's death. As a result of the Mackintosh Building fire in 2014, folders DC 066/2/87, DC 066/2/88 and DC 066/2/89 contain photographs that have been rehoused since their deposit and are likely to have been taken out of other folders. It is not clear from which folders these photographs came originally, so they have been catalogued separately with their titles reflecting the subject matter of the photographs they contain.

This item was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 15th June 2018.

Original: Statue of Augustus Caesar which was discovered on April 20, 1863, in the Villa of Livia at Prima Porta, near Rome. Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus (23 Sep 63BC-19 Aug AD14) was the first ruler of the Roman Empire, which he ruled alone from January 27BC until his death in AD14. Original currently in the collection of the Braccio Nuovo of the Vatican, Rome, Italy.

A book was published by Electa Firenze about the exhibition including images of architectural drawings, photographs, sketches and paintings. This image is of a blue, beige, and black coloured architectural drawing.

This poster advertised an exhibtion which showcased the work of design students from The Glasgow School Of Art in the Cassina Gallery in Milan. The exhibition took place as a result of the connections between Cassina Design in Italy and The Glasgow School Of Art. The poster was designed by Gordon Huntly who was the head of graphic design at The Glasgow School Of Art at that time. It was printed in the Foulis Building on an offset lithography printing press. The information on the poster translates as: "Design from Glasgow School Of Art: Cassina in Milan, March 23rd to April 6th. Ceramics. Embroidery and fabrics. This poster advertised an exhibition held in Milan in 1984 which showcased design work by students from The Glasgow School Of Art. The exhibition was held in collaboration with Cassina, a world renowned Italian manufacturing company that often reproduce famous design pieces including Mackintosh furniture. The exhibition included ceramics, embroidery, furniture design, industrial products, graphic design, illustration, silversmithing and jewellery. It took place under the patronage of the British Consulate General in Milan and was also supported by a number of other bodies including The British Council, Sir Hugh Fraser, IBM, Clydesdale Bank PLC, Radio Clyde, Wm Teacher and Sons Ltd, Scottish Development agency, MS Macfarlane Trust, COF Refrigerators, Nardini Ltd and the Governors Of The Glasgow School of Art.
