Design for embroidered pulpit-fall, 'Be Ye Doers of the word not hearers only.' The words of the design are taken from James, chapter 1, verse 22 in the New Testament. Inscribed upper right: Design for a pulpit fall/J.R. Newbery Centre: "Be Ye Doers of the world not hearers only".

Stained glass cartoon for St Mark's Church, Southport

The design depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary on the left side and a young boy (Hartley?) on the right. Design is for the lower section of a window in St Mark's, Southport; dedicated to the memory of Sir William Pickles Hartley of the Primitive Methodist Movement. Inscribed: 'What doth the Lord require of thee but to do justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God?'.

Stained glass cartoon for a two light memorial window. Inscribed: 'Come Holy Ghost'. For the church of St Clement and St James, Horsley, near Derby. This window was one of two, two light windows designed for Guthrie and Wells, the Glasgow firm of decorators who began stained glass production in 1884 and won a reputation for first class craftsmanship and always employing excellent designers (beginning in 1887 with Sir James Guthrie). Bell first designed glass for the firm in 1895 when he won the competition for new windows for the Royal Church at Crathie, and he continued to design for them for twenty-three years. In the 1920s he also designed for the City Glass Company, and examples of his work are still in the Glasgow area.

Stained glass cartoon for a two light memorial window. Inscribed: Our Souls Inspire'. For the church of St Clement and St James, Horsley, near Derby. Sandblasted glass panel

Piece of experimental sandblasted glass made by the artist as a postgraduate student. This item was made as sample for possible commission for an architect in relation to a shop front for Leeds Building Society. The final piece was made with kiln-fired fused and lustred glass panels.

The image is one of a series based loosely on a setting sun behind a pyramidal island.

  • DIR/5/38/6/4: Cardboard silhouette of Francis and Jessie Newbery in a photograph mount, c1930s (1 item).

  • DIR/5/38/6/5: Letters and fragments of letters from Jessie Newbery to her daughter Elsie and perhaps Mary. One of the letters to Elsie is dated 24 Sep 1934. The other letters are fragmentary and include topics such as recipes, books and sewing projects, c1934. (4 sheets)

This poster advertised an exhibition that was to be the first of a number of annual exhibitions showcasing the work of students from the School Of Fine Art. The exhibition was held in The Mackintosh Museum and ran from the 30th of January to the 7th of February 1987. The poster was designed by John Shankie who would later become a technician for the masters of fine art course. There are two copies of this poster in the collection, both with the same reference number.

This poster promotes a lecture by Dr Mike Weaver who was a reader in American literature from the University of Oxford. The event was held in the Mackintosh Lecture Theatre at The Glasgow School Of Art on the 1st May 1985. The poster shows an image by Julia Margaret Cameron entitled "The Kiss of Peace 1869".

Poster for The Glasgow School Of Art degree show

This poster advertised an exhibition of work by graduating fine art students included in The Glasgow School Of Art degree show in 1988. The exhibition showcased work by students studying environmental art, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture and was held in the Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School Of Art from the 18th to the 23rd of June. The image on the poster is a photograph taken by previous lecturer Vaughan Judge and shows the exhibiting students sitting on the steps of the Mackintosh Building. A key naming most of the students can be found alongside the poster under the same reference number. The list was compiled with the help of Eddie Stewart who was a former student at The Glasgow School Of Art who then became a tutor in painting and printmaking. Stewart graduated with an undergraduate degree in drawing and painting in 1988 and is included in the photograph on this poster. He then went on to do a Masters in 1990. The poster was designed by The Glasgow School Of Art and printed at David J Clark Limited. The exhibition was held in the Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School Of Art and included work by students studying drawing and painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and stained glass. The exhibition ran from the 14th to the 20th of June and the image on the poster shows exhibiting students. The photograph was taken by H. Kerr and was printed at David J. Clark Limited.
