Design for the Dug-Out, Willow Tea Rooms, Glasgow

Design for the staircase and vestibule, West Elevation, The Dug-Out, Willow Tea Rooms, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. Miss Cranston and her husband Major Cochrane commissioned Mackintosh to redesign the interiors of their home Hous'hill at Nitshill. Mackintosh designed several suites of furniture in 1904 and more pieces in 1909. Stripes are the dominant motif in the decorations, in the panels over the settle and between the doors where they are carried over the ceiling as in the guest bedroom at 78 Derngate. The lampshades are also similar to those used in this bedroom. (Roger Billcliffe). The lattice work recalls the hall at Derngate, but here it is used as an open screen rather than with solid or glazed panels. The only furniture that has been traced is the chair at the writing desk and the small table.

"Kitten" mascot

A small fabric soft "kitten" mascot.

Lviv National Academy of the Arts has been a hub for displaced staff and students since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Volunteers have been making camouflage nets for the front line. But alongside this they have also been making small toys/mascots for the soldiers from the leftover camouflage fabric. The Ukrainian soldiers are affectionately called “Our Kittens”, their Kittens fighting for Ukraine.

This "kitten" was gifted to GSA's Archives and Collections staff as a token of thanks from colleagues in the Lviv National Academy of the Arts. GSA Archives and Collections staff mentored LNAA staff through a digitisation project in 2023, as part of the funded project "Developing and Promoting Sustainable Cultural Heritage in Disaster Contexts" which was part of GSA's ongoing twinning with Lviv National Academy of the Arts. GSA's Archives and Collections staff were told that we here at GSA are also LNAA's "kittens", fighting to protect the heritage of LNAA and Ukraine.

The Glasgow School of Art Home Front Memorial

To mark the centenary of the First World War, GSA’s Archives & Collections and Exhibitions worked with Louise Welsh, Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow and Edwin Pickstone, GSA Lecturer, to create a memorial to GSA students, staff and governors who undertook work on the home front.

Consisting of three panels with text written by Louise and letterpress prints created by Edwin, the memorial was informed by archival research. The frame was designed and made by Steven Higgins with lettering from Erin Bradley-Scott.

This memorial is a partnership piece to GSA’s WWI Roll of Honour, created in 1925 by Dorothy Doddrell to commemorate students, staff and governors who had served in the armed forces.

The project was generously funded by Mr James McBroom whose father, James Nicol McBroom, was a prize-winning student at the School and who undertook munitions work during the war.

Collection of newspaper clippings

The newspaper clippings describe the Kino Film Group and explain future showings of movies. Includes film descriptions on the Civil War in Spain, the Nanjing Massacre in China by the Japanese, language films, Irish Black and Tan Troubles of 1919, on the topic of tea, and about the USSR. They also had a newsreel with scenes from the Duke of Windsor's wedding which he asked not to be released to the public and they refused. The group seems to promote politically intense films about communism, propaganda, unions, and opposing fascism. Some films are silent and some have coloured parts to them. The newspaper clippings describe the group travelling around Scotland to show the films to a wider audience and raise money for China and Spain. Some movies are from different countries like Spain, Czechoslovak, America, and Russia.

The handwritten documents are written on the back of Kino Film Ltd. agent's booking forms. 12 pages in total. Titled "Highland Clearances." On the first page, it describes the contents as "showing the change from Chief of Clan to Lord of Earl."

A Certificate of Service awarded to Sydney Horne Shepherd near the end of World War II. National Fire Service No. was 236892 with a fireman rank. Cause of discharge was "on reduction of establishment". Served from December 19, 1941 to June 30, 1945. Signed at the bottom by what appears to be a V. Bolten Deputy Fire Force Commander.

A4 sized paper scan of a black and white blown up image of a lady in white patterned headscarf. Verso " Mrs Kopaloff - 88 yrs - Stepney, East London / 1977 / A reduced cope of the original, part of our / exhibition of East End Faces, held at / Toynbee Hall - The Universities' Settlement in East London." Per DC 101/3/1, Mrs Kopaloff was sitting at her kitchen table in her pre-fabricated home shelling peas. She had escaped from Jewish persecution in Lithuania and found refuge in the United Kingdom; Veronica Matthew knew her well.
