Lindsay, John Walter

Photographs

A collection of photographs and negatives taken by George Oliver dating from 1948-1990 (apart from two dated c1897). George arranged his photographs into folders by approximate subject matter and gave each folder a title. This has been reflected in the catalogue with the folder titles in the catalogue being the exact titles George used. The folders have been arranged by subject matter where possible. There are exceptions to the above. Folders DC 066/2/20 and DC 066/2/86 have not been given a title by George and have been catalogued as 'Untitled'. There are exceptions to this with DC 066/2/78 containing photographs taken by Cordelia Oliver as they date from after George's death. As a result of the Mackintosh Building fire in 2014, folders DC 066/2/87, DC 066/2/88 and DC 066/2/89 contain photographs that have been rehoused since their deposit and are likely to have been taken out of other folders. It is not clear from which folders these photographs came originally, so they have been catalogued separately with their titles reflecting the subject matter of the photographs they contain.

Includes work carried out as part of courses such as, for example, Interior Design, the History of Furniture, the 2nd Year General Course, the Pre-Diploma /Foundation Course and Woodcarving.

Also includes sketches carried out during GSA summer schools abroad in Florence and in Norway, and materials relating to extra-curricular activities such as photographs of productions staged by GSA Dramatic Club and Christmas ball posters.

Hunter, William R

Hugh Ferguson Notebooks

Hugh Ferguson graduated from Glasgow School of Art/Architecture in 1955. His collection of papers includes a notebook of 'Descriptive Geometry' from The Royal Technical College containing notes and detailed mathematical drawings.

Ferguson received the Alexander Thompson Travelling Scholarship in 1964 and another notebook/sketchbook documents his travels over one month in Greece - from 15th of August to 5th September 1964. Two weeks were spent resident in Athens and two weeks travelling; he visited many sites including Delphi, Eleusis, Daphni, Ossios Loukas, Brauron, Mycanae, Tiryns, Pylos, Epidauros, Olympia and Corinth. Detailed notes are given on the work going on at these sites, accompanied by around 33 photographs of ongoing architectural work.

Loose papers include information on the life and works of Alexander Thompson as well as a draft of the text for the final bound travel notebook.

Travel Report

This report details student Pamela Mitchell's experiences when she traveled around Europe for three months upon receiving a travelling scholarship at The Glasgow School of Art in 1959. Mitchell was a student at the School between 1955 and 1959 and studied Textiles. She received the Haldane Travelling Scholarship which was a cash sum of £75. She visted the cities of Copenhagen, Hamburg, Basle, Milan, Venice, Florence, Ravena, Porto Garibaldi, Ferrara, Verona and Paris. The report is coherantly laid out with details of the time spent in each of these cities.

This report details student G H Barcham Green's travel experiences in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1957. Green won the Haldane travelling scholarship, a cash prize of £75 awared to one student per year at this time. Green was an Interior Design student at The Glasgow School of Art between 1952 and 1958. The report reads very much like a diary and gives a very personal account of Green's experiences. Also included is a list of addresses for both Italy and Spain.

Travel Report

This report details student John Holmes Gray's experiences when he traveled to Stoke-on-Trent, Holland, Belgium and Paris upon recieving a Travelling Scholarship at The Glasgow School of Art in 1954. Gray recieved the Haldane Travelling Scholarship which was the value of £75. Gray attended The Glasgow School of Art between 1949 and 1954 and studied Pottery. A large focus of the report is on the manufacturing processes that Gray learned in the Pottery Factories in Stoke on Trent and Holland. He includes various sketches of how these processes work throughout the report. He then goes on to detail his time spent in various art galleries and museums in Holland, Belgium and Paris.

Travel Report

This report details architecture student Harry A Wheeler's experiences when he travelled to Italy after being awarded the John Keppie Scholarship in 1948. The John Keppie Scholarship gave a bursary of £100 to one architecture student per year to fund a study trip of their choice. The focus of Wheeler's project was Loggias in Florence, Rome and Venice and the report gives biographical information on each Loggia studied. The beginning of this report lists 48 accompanying drawings.

Wheeler has commented that the Arcading is Modern Gothic and features textured brickwork. Plate 46: Five small mounted photographs. The photographs feature the sotto portico (meaning under the porch) of the Scuola Giorgo degli Schiavoni with one photograph featuring Wheeler's comments on the alternating column shapes, a Loggia near Ponte Lungo, a colonnade near San Francesca della Vigna and the Cloisters of the Monestry adjoining San Maria Maggiore in Venice. Plate 47: Four small mounted photographs. The photographs feature; A portico with a balcony Loggia above with Wheeler's comments that it is Venetian Gothic, a potico with an arcade above with Wheeler's comments that it is Venetian Byzantine, a Loggia of Modern Building with Wheeler's comments that it is Gothic style and some modelled timber brackets above columns.

Italian Sketchbook

This sketchbook consists of 81 pages of sketches made by Charles Rennie Mackintosh during his trip to Italy in 1891 funded by his Greek Thomson travelling scholarship prize money. The subjects he sketched are mainly architectural, with the one he felt to be most impressive being labelled 'A Caution'. Each sketch is labelled with the name of the city or town in which it was sketched. In 1890 Mackintosh won the Alexander 'Greek' Thomson Travelling Scholarship with a design for a public hall, which enabled him to take an extensive tour abroad from February to July 1891. He left Glasgow for London on 21 March 1891, sailing from Tilbury on the Thames on 27 March and arriving in Naples on 5 April. He then visited Palermo in Sicily, Rome, Orvieto, Siena, Florence, Pisa, Pistoia, Bologna, Ravenna, Ferrara, Venice, Padua, and Vicenza, arriving in Verona on 10 June 1891. The Sketchbook contains drawings from the later part of Mackintosh's tour, from 10th June, with sketches, mostly of architectural and sculptural details, beginning with Verona. It covers Verona (11-14 June); Mantua (14 June); Cremona (14-15 June); Brescia (16 June); Bergamo (17 June); Lecco (18 June); Cadenabbia and Lake Como (19-25 June); Como (26-27 June); Milan (28 June-6 July); Pavia (7 July-?); Certosa di Pavia (probably several days around 12 July); Paris and Chateau d'Ecouen (late July?); Antwerp (late July? - briefly visited on his return journey). It also contains several pages of designs for the Glasgow Art Club (1892-3) and the Glasgow Herald Building (1893-5). The drawings themselves are almost all pencil sketches, some of which are now quite faint.
