Alphabetical registers of students

The registers comprise lists of all students registering for attendance at Glasgow School of Art. Details recorded include registered number, name, age, month and year of admission to the School, address, trade or occupation of father. From 1892 the month of admission is omitted and from 1902 the date of admission is not given at all. From 1910 the student's date of birth is given instead of age, and the student's occupation is given instead of the father's. From 1974 the type of qualification studied for may be given, for example certificate, diploma or degree. From 1976 these registers are typed.

Annual Reports

The format and contents of the annual reports change gradually over time. The following types of information are to be found although they are not all recorded in each year's report: lists of office bearers, governors and staff, annual reports of Committee of Management/Board of Governors, reports of Headmaster/Director, various other reports, proceedings at annual meeting, tables of numbers of students attending each class, lists of occupations and ages of students, lists of prizes, programmes of classes and fees, lists of subscriptions, annual accounts. In more recent years the annual reports have mainly included only financial information. The two earliest volumes of the annual reports also include the following items: two copies of a pamphlet entitled "Laws and regulations of Glasgow Government School of Design", c1845; a copy of a document giving a short history of the Glasgow School of Art to be placed in the memorial stone to be laid by Sir Renny Watson on 25 May 1898; and a pamphlet entitled "an address to the council of the Government School of Design on the management of that institution by Henry J Townsend, member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and master of painting and modelling in the Government School of Design", 1846. Digital PDF copies exist for GOV/1/173 onwards and these can be found on the Glasgow School of Art website and are also stored within Archives and Collections.

The Glasgow School of Art

Article 55 class records

These papers comprise material relating to the administration of the Article 55 classes run by Glasgow School of Art between 1901 and 1965. Records in this series include class registers, class lists, correspondence, and enrolment forms. Class registers record details of attendance by students including examinations attended, examination marks, the number of days and hours attended and whether attending Thursday or Saturday classes. Class lists record details of students enrolled in each class. Often there are also lists which include the students' final marks. However there is a separate run of class lists at the end of the main run of papers in this series (REG/10/54) which include final marks. Apart from correspondence, administrative papers can sometimes be found such as copies of blank certificates, prospectuses, and notes on class finances. Enrolment forms are also known as entrance slips or admission slips, changing their names over the years. Details recorded include desired course and session to be enrolled upon, name and address of student, date of birth, whether a certified or assistant teacher, name of school in which employed, previous attainments in subject; previous attendance in subject under Article 91(d)/Article 55, number of hours attended, marks. Over the years different types of forms are used. Noticeably, applications for admission to the summer courses were made on the Glasgow Provincial Committee's own forms which are different from the School's forms and called application forms. Finally this series also contains four volumes relating to the Article 55 classes (REG/10/55-58). These are listed at the end of the series and include index and fees books.

Lantern slides and glass plate negatives

This series contains lantern slides showing images used at The Glasgow School of Art for a wide range of teaching purposes, including European and Asian art history, costumes, ethnography, anatomy, animals, lettering and illumination, typography and architecture. The lantern slides are in the format of an English lantern slide (82 x 82 mm and 85 x 100 mm). The series also contains glass plate negatives showing images of Glasgow School of Art student work, predominantly architecture and sculpture. However there are also negatives showing stage costumes, leatherwork, textiles design, ceramics and silversmithing. This series also contains a small amount of private photographs of staff and students as well as images of GSA's Mackintosh Building. The negatives are in various formats, most of them are an English Non Standard (Half Plate 122 x 167 mm) and a Daguerreotype Traditional (Quarter Plate, 84 x110 mm). A considerable amount of the glass plate negatives contain images for teaching purposes, mainly reproductions from GSA library books ("Fragments Antiques", "A History of Greek Art", "A History of Art in Ancient Egypt"). Their size is an Daguerreotype Traditional (Quarter Plate, 84 x110 mm). The organisation and numbering of the material reflects a previous cataloguing scheme: P4/1-2896: Lantern Slides P4/10/01-10/43 and P4/11/74-79: Glass Plate Negatives of students work, staff, students and Mackintosh Building P4/11/1/254 -589 and 11/01/01-63: Glass Plate Negatives used for teaching purposes

Minutes

Minutes of the Academic Council. Also contains minutes from a number of committees under the Academic Council, including: General Purposes Committee; Finance Sub-Committee; Ad Hoc Course CNAA Committee; Students Progress Committee; Director's Advisory Committee; Liberal Studies Committee; and Joint Examinations Committee; and a number of sub-committees that change from year to year. Other papers within the minute books include: prize lists; calendars of the academic year; copies of correspondence with bodies such as the CNAA; copies of External Examiner's reports that were discussed in committee meetings; some draft documents such as course monitoring and review forms; papers on subjects such as staff development and research; and summaries of departmental costs. Between 1973-1983 there are Day Books at AC/2 that contain supporting papers such as attendance sheets, correspondence, circulars and agendas but from 1983 these kinds of documents tend to be found within the minutes themselves. From 1991 onwards minute books were incomplete and therefore have been artificially compiled into the format of the earliest minute books from collections of Academic Council Papers by the cataloguing archivist. Format: The minutes between 1973-1989 have been arranged into folders covering the academic year and include an index book. From 1990 onwards the minute books are arranged by calendar year and are in chronological order. Data protection and sensitivity: Minutes over 30 years old are available for public consultation. Permission from the Academic Council is needed for access to those which are less than 30 years old. Records containing sensitive information about individuals have been collected into separate folders that will be closed for 75 years, in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. Folders are as follows: AC/1/1: 14 Jun 1973-30 Jan 1975 AC/1/2: 07 Feb 1975-27 May 1976 AC/1/3: 14 Jun 1976-27 Jun 1977 AC/1/4: 16 Sep 1977-20 Dec 1978 AC/1/5: 24 Jan 1979-16 Jun 1980 AC/1/6: 15 Sep 1980-15 Dec 1981 AC/1/7: 04 Feb 1982-04 Oct 1983 AC/1/8: 09 Sep 1983-20 Jun 1984 AC/1/9: 11 Sep 1984-14 Jun 1985 AC/1/10: 20 Sep 1985-13 Jun 1986 AC/1/11: 22 Oct 1986-12 Jun 1987 AC/1/12: 08 Oct 1987-25 Apr 1988 AC/1/13: 10 May 1988-23 Feb 1989 AC/1/14: 04 May 1989-11 Dec 1989 & appendix of Institutional Plan 1989 AC/1/15: 22 Jan 1990-21 Jun 1990 AC/1/16: 26 Sep 1990-28 Nov 1990 AC/1/17: 1991 AC/1/18: 1992 AC/1/19: 1993 AC/1/20: 1994 AC/1/21: 1995 AC/1/22: 1996 AC/1/23: 1997 AC/1/24: 1998 AC/1/25: 1999 AC/1/26: 2000 AC/1/27: 2001 (Mar-Jun only)
