Plant study drawings

A series of watercolour drawings featuring plant subjects (namely Anemone, Holly, Lilly, and Violet flowers) and a folder for storing the paintings. Half of the items have been signed "G. Murphy, No. 71", and one drawing has been annotated.

15 painted pattern designs featuring floral, organic, and geometric motifs, including one book cover design for 'Gulliver's Travels' by Jonathan Swift. Most of these designs are likely intended for use in wallpaper, textiles, or graphics, and attached to black backing paper. Some include annotations of student registration no. ("No. 71") and signed "Gerard Murphy."

Teaching examples

14 sheets of teaching examples and one title page, assumed to have been compiled as Murphy's portfolio during his career as an art teacher in schools located in Scotland, such as Motherwell RC High School and Coatbridge Secondary School. These teaching materials include pattern designs, graphic designs (possibly for students' school activities), and woodblock printmaking examples. Most items have been marked with the intended level of students as appropriate examples for education.

A variety of artworks completed by Mary Ramsay, including life drawings, portraits, architectural studies, designs, prints, and illustrations. Some of these items are dated to her time as a student at The Glasgow School of Art. Most items are pencil on paper, with a few further studies in paint.

This subfond includes one item by Jessie Wilson (DC 110/1/1/18), another student of The Glasgow School of Art, with whom Mary Ramsay and Margaret Macdonald started a pottery decorating business at The Studio, Strathyre, in 1926.

Sketchbooks

A collection of six sketchbooks created by Mary Ramsay, including four from her time as a student at The Glasgow School of Art, one dated to after her studies, and one undated. These sketchbooks feature a variety of subjects and themes, including life drawings, portraits, illustrations, floral patterns, ceramics studies, book designs, card designs, and lettering. Most artworks are pencil on paper, with some also using paint, ink, and pastel. Some sketchbooks include a number of loose ephemera items, such as newspaper cuttings and postage stamps.
