History
David Hally was born on 2nd July 1889, the son of David Halley a joiner's assistant and his wife Elizabeth Martin Stewart. Hally worked as a draughtsman at Stewart & Paterson of Glasgow in July 1904 at the age of 15. He remained at the practice whilst studying architecture at the Glasgow School of Art from 1905 until 1915 and the Royal Technical College. In 1914, Hally was promoted to the role of chief assistant. He became an Associate of the Glasgow chapter of the the RIAS in 1917 and was admitted LRIBA in early 1931 with his proposers being John Stewart, George Andrew Paterson and John Watson. In 1925-26, Hally took additional classes in Building Quantities at The Royal Technical College.
David Hally carried on the practise of Stewart & Paterson at 110 Blythswood Street after the death of Stewart in 1954. Hally died on 9th June 1963 at his home in Bridge of Allan. Following Hally's death the practise records and library were handed to Alexander Wright, a previous department head of architecture at The Glasgow School of Art and the President of the Glasgow Institute of Architects from the early 1940s, who cherished them throughout his life.
