George Henry Duff was born on 7 September 1888 and lived at 1381 Argyle Street in Glasgow. As a child he lived in Dumbarton Road in Glasgow and his father worked as an engine fitter.
He first attended The Glasgow School of Art in 1905-06 when he was 17. He took the Lower school classes, doing Drawing and Painting. At the time he was a clerk and he received a Haldane Evening Class Bursary for Drawing and Painting.
He joined the British Army in November 1915 when his occupation was litho artist. He was a private in the Royal Scots Regiment. He had two regimental numbers (3458 and 375764) and at the end of the war he was entitled to the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.
In 1918-19, at the age of 30, he returned to The Glasgow School Art take day classes in Drawing and Painting, whilst continuing as a litho artist. In 1919-20 he enrolled as an art student, and is listed under the Ministry of Labour scheme. He continued as an art student in 1920-21.
He was awarded his Diploma in Drawing and Painting in 1920 and in 1921 he received an Endorsement on his Diploma. An endorsement was awarded to students who completed and attained a sufficiently high standard in a course of post-diploma study.
In The Glasgow School of Art Calendar 1925-26 George H Duff is listed as having qualified as a Art Teacher.
The Dictionary of Scottish Art describes him as a "portrait and subject painter in oil and watercolour." He exhibited at various locations including the Royal Scottish Academy (1920, 1925, 1935, 1937), the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (1924,1930).
