History
Winifred Margaret Marshall Downie, born 06/10/1891, attended The Glasgow School of Art for sessions in 1910-11, 1913-1914, and 1915-16. She was a day student at all times but we do not know exactly which topics she studied. We do know that in 1910 she took classes with Professor Artot who taught 'Course from the Living Animal', and that in 1915-16 she studied Drawing and Painting. Her occupation, when listed, is that of 'art student'. Downie was the daughter of Margaret Marshall Wallace Downie and John Andrew Downie. She was born in Partick, and she resided in Westbourne Terrace throughout her time at the art school.
According to records from a public family tree on ancestry.co.uk, Downie was married in 1921 to Eric Nelson Wanklyn. Incoming passenger records kept by shipping lines show that on travels which she made to South Africa over the next decades, her occupation was 'housewife' or 'none'.
