History

Catherine Downie attended evening classes in Drawing and Painting at The Glasgow School of Art throughout the 1915-16 session. The Glasgow School of Art registers show that she resided in Bilsland Drive, Glasgow, during this period. Unfortunately we do not have a date of birth noted for Downie. Her occupation, however, is on record as being 'teacher', and she appears in the register beside thirteen other teachers who also took evening classes in various topics. It seems likely that these individuals were attending sessions run specifically for teachers. One module run by The Glasgow School of Art during this period was 'Art 55' which was for the 'further instruction of art teachers in advanced art subjects'. This module was scheduled to take place on weekends, and it is possible that Downie and the other teachers attended this class, but appear in the register as evening students for administrative purposes.
