History
William Dowell, born 21/10/1897, attended evening classes in Drawing and Painting at The Glasgow School of Art for the 1918-1919 session. Dowell worked as a commercial traveller at this time. He had previously served as a Private in the 5th Scottish Rifles, but was discharged in 1917 having sustained a gunshot wound to the left shoulder. His pension records note him as being an honest and diligent man - fair with blue eyes. At this time his trade was listed as 'warehouseman'. He was awarded the Star, Victory and British medals with clasp and roses, and the Silver War Badge for serving under fire in France or Belgium between August and November 1914.
Dowell resided in Glenholm, Lenzie, alongside his sister Margaret (or 'Greta') Dowell who also attended The Glasgow School of Art and whose details can be found at the following link: http://www.gsaarchives.net/archon/index.php?p=core/search&subjectid=1280
