History
Elizabeth Dodd, born 22/04/1895, took Saturday classes in Drawing and Painting at The Glasgow School of Art. She first attended for for the 1916-17 session and evidence suggests that she later attended the 1929-30 session.
The GSA Registers record Dodd's occupation in 1916-17 as 'teacher'. At this point she was registered under two addresses - one (c/o 'Drummond') in St Georges Road, Glasgow, and a second: Provostland, Tarbolton, Ayrshire. Further research shows that 'Provostlands House' formerly stood on 4 Cunningham Street in Tarbolton.
During the 1929-30 session an 'Elizabeth Dodd' registered with The Glasgow School of Art. There is no record of the date of birth of this attendee. The given address is for the 'Dumfries Arms Hotel' in Cumnock, Ayrshire. Cumnock lies roughly twelve miles from Tarbolton. We cannot prove that the Dodd who registered in 1916 is the same individual as the Dodd who registered in 1929 – however the evidence suggests that she was.
On August 4th 1928 a thirty three year old teacher, Elizabeth Dodd of 'Provostland, Tarbolton', disembarked the steamship Oroya which she had boarded in La Pallice. In September 1935, Elizabeth Dodd, 40 year old teacher from Tarbolton, disembarked the steamship Athenia which she had boarded in Montreal. In both cases the records show that Dodd's intended country of future residence was Scotland.
Indeed although she travelled, it seems that Dodd retained her ties to Tarbolton for her whole life. The website findagraveinscotland.com lists a gravestone in Tarbolton for an Elizabeth Dodd who died 12/04/71 at the age of seventy-five.This website shows other individuals in Tarbolton by the name of Dodd, including an 'Adam Dodd'. The details provided for Adam Dodd allowed for the discovery of a personal family tree on ancestry.co.uk. This tree suggests that Adam Dodd may have been father to Elizabeth Dodd, and that she may also have had four siblings. Ayrshire directories from 1928, 1930 and 1934 show that an Adam Dodd, living in Cunningham Street, Tarbolton (the same street as Provostlands House) was a Resident Acting Justice of the Peace in Ayreshire .
