History

Agnes Fletcher Dickie attended Glasgow School of Art from 1905-1911. She was aged 18 when she first attended classes, and her date of birth is given in the student registers as13 November 1889.

Throughout her time at Glasgow School of Art, Dickie stayed in various places in Glasgow. Like many female students in Glasgow during this period, in the sessions of 1905-6 and 1907-8 she was resident at Queen Margaret Hall. Other Glasgow addresses that are listed at this time are 257 West Princes Street (1906-7), 30 Barrington Drive and (care of “Fraser”), 83 Hill Street. Her home address was listed as “Greystone Park”, Dumfries.

Agnes Dickie seems to have been quite successful during her time at GSA. In session 1906-7 she was awarded an assisted studentship, in 1909-10 won a travelling bursary in Drawing and Painting to the value of £10, and one worth £20 the following year. She was finally awarded her diploma in 1911, one of only 5 Drawing and Painting students and 7 in total to gain this honour in that year. She was certainly taught by some well-known and well-regarded artists and teachers throughout her time in Glasgow. Paul Artot, Huck, and Maurice Griffenhagen are all listed as her teachers at some point in her student career. Dickie also seems to have been involved in the School on a wider level; being made the Honoury Secretary of the Glasgow School of Art Club in 1908-9.

Agnes Dickie herself went on to become a teacher. She is listed in the registers as an “Art Student Teacher in Training” in 1909, and is known to have worked from premises in John Street, Glasgow. By 1910 she is teaching at Kennedy Street whilst completing her own studies at GSA.
