History

Annie H M Dick, born 24/10/1891, attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1911 to 1918. Until 1915 she is registered as residing in both Orkney and Glasgow concurrently (West Princess Street/Colebrook Street, and Cross and Burness Manse respectively). From 1915 she is registered as residing in Colebrook Street only.

Annie H M Dick was a day student studying Drawing and Painting throughout her time at The Glasgow School of Art. She achieved her Diploma in 1917. She is then noted as attending day classes in Drawing and Painting in the 1917-18 session. A note in the margin of the art school General Register states '5 days' in relation to her attendance. It is not clear whether this indicates that she attended 5 days per week, or if she was attending for a specific 5-day session. We do know, however, that for this session she was granted a 'MacLaren Bursary' of £20 to assist in her studies. She also received financial assistance from the Glasgow Secondary Education Committee in the 1912-13 and 1914-15 sessions.

In January 1915 she helped with Stall 3 in the Belgian Market, part of the Belgium Tryst at The Glasgow School of Art. This was a two-day event with exhibitions, music and shows, organised by students to raise funds for Belgians suffering from the impact of the First World War.

During the 1911-12 session Dick studied 'Preparatory antique: ornament and preparatory painting' under probationary teacher Alexander Musgrove. Musgrove was a former student of The Glasgow School of Art.

In the 1919-20 Calendar 1919-20 she is listed as having received her art teacher qualification having been awarded The Glasgow School of Art Diploma and then completed the required professional training.
