History
James Connell was born on 20 April, 1893 and took evening classes at the GSoA from 1916 to 1920. Throughout his career at the school his address remained 121 Greenhead Street, Glasgow, and his occupation as an engineering draughtsman - though in the 1917-1918 register, the entry is more specific, describing him as a marine draughtsman. It is possible he was connected to Charles Connell & Co. Ltd., Shipbuilders at Scotstoun Shipping Yard. In his first year, he enrolled to study Drawing and Painting and the register notes that his class was held in room 43. In 1917-1918, he took Life classes with Mr Shanks in room 45 (presumably W Somerville Shanks, Head of Life Portraiture and Costume modelling from 1914); the following year he took Drawing and Painting again and then switched to modelling in 1919-20.
