William Gillies Buchanan was born in Milton, Glasgow in 1894 to Christina Buchanan and William Buchanan, a grocer. From 1911 to 1914 he attended evening classes in drawing and painting at The Glasgow School of Art while working as a process artist. During the First World War he served in the Scottish Horse regiment. He died in Busby, Renfrew in 1958. William Buchanan is listed in the School's World War One Roll of Honour.
