Volunteering Opportunity – Cataloguing and Digitisation Programme

GSA Archives and Collections currently has an exciting opportunity to contribute to our cataloguing and digitisation programme

DC 91 Dugald Cameron Archive

Former GSA Director Dugald Cameron studied at the School between 1957-1963. Dugald specialised in Industrial Design and during his post-diploma year, worked on the design of innovative ultrasound machines. The Archives and Collections hold examples of Dugald’s work from throughout his studies, for more information see: https://gsaarchives.net/catalogue/index.php/dc-091 .

GSA are planning an exhibition and publication for later in 2019 which will explore the development of ultrasound in Glasgow. As part of this project, we are looking for a volunteer to further catalogue and undertake some digitisation of Dugald’s archive.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, reliable and trustworthy individual with an interest in history, design, and/or the history of GSA and its students and staff. You will have some experience of conducting research, good communication skills and excellent attention to detail. The volunteer will liaise with Dugald and Alastair Macdonald (who is researching the exhibition and publication) in order to collate information and sort the archive items. The volunteer will also undertake repackaging and some digitisation work, and there will be opportunities to disseminate research via presentations/talks and via our blog.

This is a great opportunity for someone who’d like to gain more experience of working with original archive material. Full training will be provided and you will learn how to undertake archive cataloguing (including using Atom collections management software), repackaging, and digitisation work. Where possible we also try to plan events (such as talks or visits) and development opportunities as part of your placement. Please take a look at our blog for examples of volunteer placements conducted thus far: http://www.gsaarchives.net/blog/

Volunteers must be able to commit to 1 day a week for 12 weeks in the first instance, starting in May 2019. Volunteers must be available to come in on Fridays.

The placement will be based at the Archives and Collections premises at The Whisky Bond in Glasgow: http://www.thewhiskybond.co.uk/

It is envisaged that an induction morning will be held on Friday 3rd May and that the volunteer should be available to start the following week (Friday 10th May).

If you are interested in applying please send a covering letter and CV (including contact details for two referees) to Susannah Waters, Archives and Collections Manager, s.waters@gsa.ac.uk by 5pm on Monday 22nd April.
