Opening this weekend at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is an exhibition of work by Scottish women artists. Covering the period from 1885 (when Francis Newbery became Director of the Glasgow School of Art) until 1965, this exhibition will have more than 90 works on show drawn from the National Galleries’ collections, public collections, and our own!
From our own collections the sculpture ‘Mamie Biggar‘ by Helen Biggar will be on display amongst work by other notable GSA staff and alumna including Bet Low, Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, Joan Eardley, Norah Neilson Gray, and many other significant artists.
These artists’ work as well as the conditions they had to negotiate as students and professionals due to their gender will be explored, uncovering and celebrating women’s contribution to the history of Scottish modern art.
